This causes the plastic to oxidise, a chemical process that turns the surface hazy, cloudy and yellow. The longer the exposure, the worse the oxidation becomes, which is why headlights tend to deteriorate progressively over time, looking gradually cloudier and more yellow each year. Cars that are frequently parked outside in the sun tend to suffer faster than those kept in a garage, as they receive more ultraviolet exposure to drive the degradation.
Other factors contribute to the deterioration alongside ultraviolet light. Exposure to the elements, including rain, road grime, chemicals and general environmental contamination, adds to the wear on the lens surface. Heat from the headlight bulbs can also play a part, and the constant exposure to road debris and washing causes fine abrasion over time. While ultraviolet light and the breakdown of the protective coating are the primary causes, these additional factors combine to accelerate the dulling and clouding, contributing to the tired appearance that ageing headlights develop.
The result of all these processes is the cloudy, yellow, dull appearance that affects so many older headlights, and which not only looks unsightly but also reduces the light output of the headlights. As the lens becomes cloudy, it scatters and absorbs more of the light from the bulb, so less light reaches the road, which can affect visibility at night. This is why deteriorated headlights are both a cosmetic and a safety concern, and why restoring their clarity improves both the look of the car and the performance of the lights.
It is worth understanding that the rate at which headlights yellow varies considerably depending on how and where a car is kept, which explains why some cars suffer far sooner than others. A car parked outside in the open, exposed to strong sunlight day after day, will see its headlights degrade more quickly than one kept in a garage or regularly parked in the shade, since ultraviolet light is the main driver of the deterioration. Climate plays a part too, with sunnier conditions accelerating the process.
