What happens if you skip machine polishing

A ceramic coating applied over swirled, scratched or dull paint permanently seals those defects beneath a hard, durable layer. The coating itself may be performing exactly as intended, the hydrophobic properties will be present, the chemical resistance will be intact, but the paint beneath will look wrong.

Worse, because ceramic coatings are semi-permanent and cannot be removed by normal washing, correcting the paintwork afterwards requires cutting through the coating itself, which is significantly more labour-intensive and expensive than starting correctly.

This is precisely why we are frustrated by the 'quick ceramic coating' services that skip paint preparation. They are applying an expensive product over a poor foundation and calling it premium protection.

Why dealership protection packages often fail

Most dealership paint protection packages involve a quick application of a polymer sealant, often not even a true ceramic coating, applied without any meaningful preparation. The paintwork may already have swirls from dealer prep, the application is typically hurried, and the product is usually inferior to professional-grade options.

The result is paint protection applied over imperfect paint, creating a result that is mediocre from day one. This is one of the primary reasons clients come to us having been disappointed by what their dealer told them was 'ceramic protection'.

What machine polishing achieves before coating

Machine polishing before ceramic coating serves two critical purposes. First, it improves the paintwork, removing swirl marks, light scratches, holograms and surface oxidation to bring the paint to the best condition it can practically achieve. Second, it prepares the surface, fresh, corrected paint with the polishing oils removed provides optimal adhesion for the ceramic coating.

A properly decontaminated, machine polished and panel-wiped surface creates a clean, defect-free substrate that the ceramic coating bonds to perfectly. The result is maximum gloss, maximum protection and a finish that genuinely impresses.

Single stage vs two stage polishing before coating

The choice between single stage and two stage polishing before ceramic coating depends on the condition of the paint.

Single stage machine polishing is appropriate for newer vehicles with minimal swirling, vehicles where the paint has been well maintained, and new cars that simply need a light correction to remove any transport or dealer prep damage before coating.

Two stage machine polishing is appropriate for vehicles with significant swirl marks, older or higher-mileage vehicles, dark-coloured cars (which show swirling much more readily), and any vehicle where paint correction is the primary goal before a long-term coating is applied.

The panel wipe step

After machine polishing and before coating application, every panel must be wiped with an isopropyl alcohol-based preparation fluid. Polishing compounds contain oils that aid in the polishing process, but these same oils will interfere with ceramic coating adhesion if not removed.
