Single Stage vs Two Stage Machine Polish: What's the Difference?

What is machine polishing?

Machine polishing uses a rotary or dual-action machine polisher, combined with a foam or microfiber pad and an abrasive compound or polish, to remove a microscopic layer of the clear coat, the thin, transparent outermost layer of your vehicle's paint system.

This process removes defects that exist within the clear coat, swirl marks, holograms, light scratches, water spot etching and surface oxidation, by levelling the surface around them. The result is a cleaner, smoother, more reflective surface.

Machine polishing cannot remove scratches that penetrate through the clear coat into the base colour or primer. Those require touch-up paint or panel respray. An experienced detailer will inspect the vehicle under specialist lighting to determine what is achievable before starting.

What is single stage machine polishing?

Single stage machine polishing uses one type of pad and compound combination to simultaneously cut, correct and refine the paint. It is a more efficient process, typically completed in a single day, and removes approximately 70% of surface defects.

Single stage polishing is appropriate for vehicles with light to moderate swirling, newer cars with relatively healthy paintwork, and vehicles where the goal is enhancement and preparation for ceramic coating rather than full correction.

What is two stage machine polishing?

Two stage machine polishing uses two separate compound and pad combinations, a heavier cutting stage to aggressively remove defects, followed by a finer refining stage to remove the marks left by the heavier compound and enhance gloss. This requires considerably more time and skill.

The result is substantially more thorough. Two stage polishing removes 80 to 95% of surface defects, including deeper swirl marks, holograms, light scratches and moderate surface oxidation that single stage polishing cannot fully address.

Our two stage machine polish costs from £1,000 to £1,400 depending on vehicle size. This is the most popular choice for dark-coloured vehicles, high-mileage vehicles, and any car where paint condition has been neglected over several years.

Which does your car need?

There is no universal answer, but the following guidelines are reliable:

Single stage is usually sufficient for: newer vehicles under three years old, cars that have been regularly hand-washed, light-coloured vehicles where swirling is less visible, and vehicles being prepared for new car protection detail.

Two stage is recommended for: dark-coloured vehicles (black, navy, dark grey, dark red), any car that has been regularly put through an automated car wash, vehicles with noticeably swirled paint in direct sunlight, higher-mileage cars, and any vehicle where the goal is maximum paint correction before long-term ceramic coating.
