Summer Car Detailing: Protecting Your Paint from UV, Dust and Bird Droppings

Ultraviolet light from the sun is one of the most significant threats to paintwork in summer, and its effects are gradual but real. Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight causes paint to fade and oxidise over time, dulling the colour and the gloss and ageing the finish, with darker and brighter colours often showing the effects most clearly. The sun also heats the surface of the car considerably, which can make any contamination sitting on the paint more damaging. Protecting the paint from ultraviolet light is therefore an important part of summer care, particularly for cars that are parked outside.

Bird droppings are perhaps the most immediate and damaging summer hazard, and they are far more harmful than many owners realise. Bird droppings are acidic and, especially when baked onto hot paintwork by the summer sun, can etch into the surface and cause permanent marks if they are not removed promptly. The combination of acidic droppings and heat makes summer a particularly risky time, and leaving a dropping on the paint even for a day or two in hot weather can result in a lasting etch. Dust, pollen and insects are constant nuisances in summer that affect both the appearance and the condition of the paintwork. Pollen coats cars in a fine yellow film during the season and can be mildly acidic, dust settles continually and dulls the finish, and insects splattered onto the front of the car contain acids that can mark the paint if left. None of these is as immediately damaging as a bird dropping, but allowing them to accumulate and remain on the car over the summer contributes to a dull, contaminated finish and, in the case of insect remains, can lead to etching if not cleaned off reasonably promptly.

Protecting the paintwork with a quality coating or wax is just as valuable in summer as in winter, though for somewhat different reasons. A good layer of protection helps shield the paint from ultraviolet light, provides a barrier against the acidic threats of bird droppings, insects and pollen, and makes contamination easier to remove before it can cause harm. A car finished with a ceramic coating, in particular, is far better defended against summer's hazards and much easier to keep clean, so applying protection before the summer is a sensible way to guard the finish through the warmer months.

Regular washing remains important through summer to remove the dust, pollen, insects and other contamination that accumulate, and prompt attention to bird droppings is essential. Keeping the car clean prevents the gradual dulling that summer contamination causes and removes acidic threats before they can etch the paint. Where possible, parking in the shade or under cover reduces the car's exposure to ultraviolet light and limits how quickly bird droppings bake onto hot paint, and a car cover can offer useful protection for vehicles left outside for long periods, all of which help preserve the finish through the season.

It is worth remembering that where you park makes one of the biggest differences to how much summer damage a car suffers, and it costs nothing to take advantage of. Parking in the shade, under a carport or away from trees that harbour birds and drop sap dramatically reduces a car's exposure to the ultraviolet light, heat and contamination that cause the most harm in the warmer months. Where shaded parking is not available, a breathable car cover offers worthwhile protection for a vehicle left standing for long periods. Combining sensible parking with good protection and prompt cleaning gives a car the best possible defence against summer's hazards, and helps keep the paintwork looking fresh through the season and beyond.
