Consumer-grade ceramic coatings, available from accessory shops and online, typically last 12 to 24 months under normal conditions. They are easier to apply and accessible to any car owner, but their coating layer is thinner and their chemical bond is less robust than professional-grade alternatives.

Professional-grade coatings, applied by trained specialists, last considerably longer. At NTB Detailing, we use PPL Reign 10H, a professional-only product that provides up to 7 years of protection when maintained correctly. This is not marketing language, it reflects the coating's coating layer thickness, hardness rating and proven durability in the UK climate.

What affects longevity

Several factors determine how long a ceramic coating remains effective in practice:

• Washing method, safe washing techniques (two-bucket method, pH-neutral products) preserve the coating. Automated car washes and harsh alkaline products degrade it
• Maintenance top-up products, applying a ceramic booster or maintenance spray every 6 to 12 months significantly extends coating life
• Exposure to UV, UK levels of UV exposure are relatively low compared to warmer climates, which is an advantage for durability
• Road salt and contamination, winter road salt is chemically aggressive; the coating resists it, but vehicles that are never washed will see the coating work harder
• Bird droppings, the most dangerous common contaminant. Acidic bird droppings left on a coated vehicle for several days will still etch through a ceramic coating if left long enough. Remove them promptly
• Quality of preparation, a coating applied over uncleaned or unpolished paint will not adhere as strongly and will not last as long

The maintenance schedule for 7-year durability

To achieve the full 7-year durability from a PPL Reign 10H coating, we recommend the following:

Regular safe washing, ideally every 2 weeks, using the two-bucket method and a pH-neutral snow foam. This prevents contamination bonding to the coating and keeps the hydrophobic properties active.

Annual maintenance top-up, a ceramic booster product applied once a year refreshes the hydrophobic layer and adds protection to any areas of the coating that have experienced heavy use.

Prompt decontamination, iron fallout decontamination every 6 to 12 months removes metallic contamination (brake dust particles, industrial fallout) that bonds to the coating's surface.

Signs your coating needs attention

The most reliable indicator of coating performance is water behaviour. A well-maintained ceramic coating will produce tight, spherical water beads that roll quickly across the surface with minimal surface tension. As the coating degrades, beads become broader and less spherical, and water starts to sheet rather than bead.

If you notice this change, it is usually time for a maintenance top-up rather than a full re-application, provided the base coating was professionally applied.

How long it takes to apply

A full ceramic coating package at NTB Detailing, including decontamination, machine polishing, panel wipe and coating application with indoor curing, typically takes 2 to 4 days depending on vehicle size and paint condition. This is not something to rush. The curing time is as important as the application itself.
