Why Dealership Paint Protection Is Not the Same as Professional Ceramic Coating

What dealerships actually apply

Most franchised and independent dealers apply one of a small number of polymer sealants distributed specifically for the dealer market. These products are designed to be applied quickly, often in under 30 minutes for a full vehicle, by valeting staff who may have received minimal training.

The products themselves are not worthless. A quality polymer sealant does provide some short-term protection. But it is categorically not the same as a professional-grade ceramic coating, and the application process is nothing like what happens at a specialist detailing studio.

Some dealers have started using the word 'ceramic' in their product marketing because it has become associated with quality. In many cases, the product contains minimal or no genuine ceramic compounds, and the protective properties are closer to a wax or polymer sealant than to a professionally applied 10H coating.

What happens before application at a dealer

At a professional detailing studio, application of ceramic coating is preceded by thorough decontamination, iron fallout removal, tar removal, clay bar treatment, followed by machine polishing to correct the paint, followed by a panel wipe to ensure perfect adhesion.

This preparation process takes at least a full day, often two. It is what makes a ceramic coating look spectacular and adhere properly.

At most dealers, preparation consists of a standard wash and dry. No decontamination beyond soap. No machine polishing. No preparation compound. The sealant is applied directly over a surface that may have transport damage, dealer prep swirls, bonded contamination and dried water spots.

Even if the dealer was applying a genuine ceramic coating, which most are not, the results would be compromised by inadequate preparation.

The warranty problem

Dealerships often sell their paint protection with a warranty, 5 year, 10 year, or sometimes 'lifetime'. These warranties are typically provided by the product supplier rather than the dealer, and claiming against them is usually complex, subject to significant conditions, and far more difficult in practice than the marketing implies.

How to tell if you have a dealer product

If your vehicle already has a dealer protection package, there are a few ways to assess its quality. The water beading behaviour on a quality ceramic coating is distinctive, water forms tight, spherical beads that roll quickly off the surface. Standard polymer sealants produce broader, flatter beads that sheet rather than bead, and this effect diminishes rapidly.

If you run a hand over the paint and it feels immediately contaminated (rough, gritty) within a few washes, the protection is minimal. A good ceramic coating creates a surface that is noticeably more resistant to contamination bonding.
