Can Machine Polishing Remove Scratches?

How paint is structured

To understand what machine polishing can and cannot do, it helps to understand how a vehicle's paint system is constructed. Modern vehicles have four layers: the steel or aluminium bodywork, a primer coat, a base coat (the colour), and a clear coat, the thin, transparent outer layer that gives paint its gloss and provides most of its protection.

Machine polishing works on the clear coat. It removes a microscopic layer of the clear coat to level the surface, eliminating scratches and marks that exist within that outermost layer. It cannot affect the base coat, primer or body panel beneath.

Scratches machine polishing can remove

Any scratch that exists only within the clear coat can be removed by machine polishing. These are the most common type of marks and include:

• Swirl marks, the circular or spiderweb scratches caused by improper washing technique, particularly automated car washes
• Hologramming, the linear marks left by rotary polishers used incorrectly, or by detailers who do not refine their work
• Light surface scratches, shallow marks from car park doors, keys (minor), twigs or debris
• Water spot etching, mineral deposits from hard water that have etched slightly into the clear coat
• Surface oxidation, the dull, chalky film that develops on older clear coats from UV exposure

Scratches machine polishing cannot remove

Any scratch that has penetrated through the clear coat and into the base colour or primer cannot be removed by machine polishing. You can often identify these by looking at the scratch: if you can see a different colour in the scratch, lighter than the surrounding paint, it has gone through the clear coat.

These types of marks include deep stone chips that have exposed bare metal, significant key scratches, deep car park scrapes where bare paint or metal is visible, and any damage involving denting or deformation of the panel.

For these marks, the options are touch-up paint (for stone chips), professional respray or SMART repair depending on the extent of the damage.

The fingernail test

A rough field test: if your fingernail catches in the scratch, if you can feel a definite groove, the scratch has likely penetrated the clear coat and cannot be fully removed by polishing. If your nail slides over the mark without catching, it is likely a surface mark within the clear coat that machine polishing can address.

Managing expectations

We do not take on work with promises we cannot keep. If a scratch cannot be fully removed, we will tell you that upfront, and explain whether its appearance can be improved or whether another approach is more suitable.

For most vehicles, machine polishing delivers a genuinely striking improvement. Swirl marks that make a car look dull and tired in direct sunlight are, for the majority of cars we see, completely removable. The difference before and after is usually the most satisfying part of our work.
