Chislehurst's conservation status means mature tree cover on most residential roads and gravel on a lot of the driveways. Both leave marks.

Gravel throws up under acceleration and braking, and the damage concentrates low: sills, lower doors, rear arches and the front valance. It is easy to miss because you rarely look at a car from that angle, and by the time it is obvious there are usually dozens of small chips rather than one.

Chips cannot be polished out. Anything through the clear coat needs filling and levelling, or accepting. What correction does do is remove the surrounding haze and micro-marring so the chips are far less visually obvious, and what a coating does is stop water sitting in them. On an exposed chip, standing water is the thing that turns a cosmetic mark into a corrosion site.

Tree cover, and what to do about it

The mature trees that make Chislehurst so pleasant also drop sap and bird lime onto parked cars, both of which are acidic and etch the clear coat if left. The short version is to remove deposits promptly and keep a coating on the paint so they cannot bond. We go into this in more detail on our Beckenham page, which faces the same problem.
