Sap and bird lime do more damage than people think

Beckenham's tree cover is one of the nicest things about the area and one of the worst things about parking a car there.

Both sap and bird lime are acidic, and both etch. Bird lime is the more aggressive of the two: it can etch through a clear coat within hours in summer, because the heat accelerates the reaction and bakes the residue onto the surface. What is left is not a stain sitting on the paint, it is a physical depression in the clear coat shaped like the deposit.

Tree sap behaves differently. It hardens into a resin that bonds mechanically, and the instinct to scrape or pick it off is what causes most of the damage we see. The resin usually comes off cleanly. The scratches from removing it badly do not.

Removing it without making things worse

Etching needs machine correction, because you are levelling the surrounding clear coat down to the base of the etch mark. That is a paint-removing process, so paint depth measurement is not optional. Hardened resin needs a solvent-based approach and patience, not abrasion.

We assess each mark individually. Some lift with careful chemical work alone, others need machine correction, and we will always take the least aggressive route that actually fixes the problem.

Stopping it happening again

A ceramic coating does not make your car sap-proof. What it does is give the deposit a sacrificial layer to sit on and a surface it cannot bond to, so it comes off with a wash instead of needing correction. That is the realistic benefit and we would rather state it accurately than oversell it.
